Message from the head: Welcome to the King David Rosabelle Klein Nursery School Family

Caron Levy
King David Rosabelle Klein Pre-Primary (Waverley)
King David Rosabelle Klein Nursery School (RKNS) is a place where childhood is honoured, nurtured, and celebrated every day. Our school is not simply a place of learning; it is a second home where each child is truly seen, valued, and cherished. We recognise that every child arrives with a unique spirit, full of curiosity and possibility, and it is our privilege to help that light shine. Through warmth, play, and meaningful relationships, we create an environment where children feel secure, joyful, and deeply connected to themselves, to others, and to the world around them.
At the heart of our school is a commitment to excellence, not only in what children learn, but in how they learn. We foster intellectual curiosity through a thoughtfully designed curriculum that blends structured learning with exploration and discovery. Our STEAM-based approach introduces children to science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics in ways that are engaging, hands-on, and age-appropriate. Through creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking, we lay the foundations for lifelong learning. While academic achievement will always be important, we see it as part of a broader journey that prepares children not only for future schooling, but for meaningful, purposeful lives shaped by curiosity and confidence.

Jewish life and values form the heartbeat of RKNS. Rooted in Torah and a deep love for Israel, our programme nurtures a strong sense of identity and belonging from the earliest years. Through songs, stories, brachot, chaggim, Shabbat, and parsha, our children are gently guided into a living connection with their heritage. We instil values such as kindness, gratitude, respect, and unity, ensuring that these are not only taught, but lived each day. Our approach is inclusive and embracing, welcoming families of all levels of observance, and creating a shared space where every child feels part of the ongoing story of Am Yisrael. In giving our children these roots, we empower them with the confidence and pride to grow and flourish.
Each child at our school is known, understood, and supported as a whole individual. Guided by the wisdom of “teach each child according to their way,” we honour every stage of development emotionally, socially, cognitively, and physically. Our dedicated and compassionate educators create a nurturing environment where children feel safe to explore, express themselves, and build meaningful relationships. Social and emotional learning is central to this journey, helping children develop empathy, resilience, and a strong sense of self. Through play, creative expression, and guided interaction, children begin to form the character and confidence that will shape them into moral, ethical, and caring individuals.
Choosing a school is one of the most important decisions a family can make, and we warmly invite you to experience King David Rosabelle Klein Nursery School for yourself. Come and feel the joy in our classrooms, the warmth of our community, and the sense of belonging that defines who we are. We look forward to partnering with you on this meaningful journey and walking alongside your child as they grow, discover, and thrive. Together, we can create a foundation that will support them for life.
Jewish Life & Learning
At RKNS Jewish traditions, values and practice come to life in a multi-sensory, joyful way. From morning davening ring, to songs, toys, crafts, alef bet and the way our classrooms are decorated, Jewish values are in our DNA, our curriculum, our methodologies and everything we do. Shabbat rings, the Chaggim and Parsha offer rich and exciting stories and themes to explore. Jewish holidays like Pesach, Shavuot, Sukkot and Rosh Hashanah and Israel’s national holidays offer opportunities for celebration throughout the year, concerts and connection with the parents and the Jewish community. Connection to Israel and South Africa also offer colourful and experiential opportunities to explore identity, pride and diversity which are the building blocks of self confidence in self and tolerance for differences.
Educational Excellence
At RKNS, academic excellence is nurtured every day by devoted, caring teachers who care deeply about each child and inspire a genuine and lifelong love of learning.

Pre-primary school children learn through play – whether structured, organised and purposeful or free play. These years are critical for a child’s holistic development, from soft skills to developmental and physical milestones. RKNS follows established ISASA guidelines to ensure each child builds the age-appropriate skills needed at every stage of development. Appealing, age-appropriate play equipment, sandpit and water play, directed guided play and classroom themes are all intentionally designed to develop each child’s literacy, numeracy, visual and auditory processing, motor planning, social and emotional skills. Our goal is to nurture confident, independent, self-regulated children and give them the 21st century skills of communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking.

Social and Emotional Learning
Social and Emotional Learning
Social and emotional wellbeing is built into the curriculum and into everything we do. Children from as young as 18 months learn to understand and name their own and the feelings of others, interact, respect each other, share and say sorry. “It’s Cool to Be Kind”, is our constant top-of-mind theme and kindness is emphasised, celebrated and rewarded. Our in-house educational psychologist works with classes each week and offers one-on-one short-term counselling with children and families where needed.

Purposeful Digital Learning
Purposeful Digital Learning
AT RKNS technology is used responsibly and with care, with the minimum amount of screen-time necessary to enrich learning. Our tech-enhanced classrooms may feature smartboards, smart TVs and cutting-edge toys such as B-Bots, Sphero and Lego robotics, but the emphasis is never on the particular technology or tool used, rather on the skills it develops. Through play around sequencing, size concepts and the like, we are intentionally forming the building blocks of advanced coding, mathematics, numeracy, literacy and logic.

A Culture of Continuous Learning
A Culture of Continuous Learning
Our educators are lifelong learners, continually engaging in professional development through courses, conferences and workshops that expose them to the latest research, technologies and best practices in education.
This commitment translates into an eclectic and intentional approach in the classroom that draws on the strengths of multiple methodologies, selecting what truly adds value to each child’s learning experience. Rather than following trends, our teachers make thoughtful, informed choices, integrating approaches because they are effective, meaningful and developmentally appropriate.
The result is a dynamic learning environment where teaching is both informed by global best practice and carefully adapted to meet the needs of our children.

Beyond the Classroom
Intra & Extra murals
At RKNS, we believe that meaningful learning extends beyond the curriculum and the classroom. Our carefully curated programme of intra- and extra-mural activities encourages every child to explore, create, move and grow in a balanced, joyful environment.
Intra-Murals (Included in the School Day)
Our intra-mural programme forms an integral part of the daily curriculum and takes place during school hours. These sessions are thoughtfully designed to enrich each child’s development through a variety of structured, age-appropriate experiences.
Children look forward to and participate in activities which support cognitive, physical and social growth.
As children progress through the units, the programme evolves to include additional elements such as language stimulation, confidence-building activities, and Hebrew.
By integrating these experiences into the school day, we ensure that every child benefits from a rich, well-rounded education in a consistent and nurturing environment.
Extra-Murals (Optional after-school enrichment)
In addition to our curriculum, we offer a range of optional extra-mural activities that take place conveniently on campus after school. These programmes are offered by external specialists and are paid for directly by parents.
These sessions provide children with the opportunity to further explore their interests, develop new skills, and build confidence in a fun, supportive setting.
Importantly, hosting these activities on campus offers families the convenience of a seamless extension to the school day, eliminating the need to travel between venues while ensuring children remain in a familiar, safe environment.
