Message from the head: Welcome to the Minnie Bersohn Pre-Primary School

Mandi Defries
Minnie Bersohn Pre-Primary School
There is a unique energy that permeates Minnie Bersohn Pre-Primary. It is a sound shaped by joyful discovery in our classrooms, the hum of imagination in our creative spaces, and the laughter that fills our playground during celebrations and everyday moments alike. To walk through our gates is to experience more than just a school; it is to become part of a warm, connected community devoted to both excellence and the wellbeing of every child. Here, our school becomes a true second home, where each child is embraced, known, and valued, and where a deep sense of belonging is felt from the very first day.
At Minnie Bersohn, we believe that education is a meaningful journey of discovery that begins in the earliest years. Our commitment to the pursuit of excellence is reflected in a carefully balanced programme that blends academic rigour with a deep sense of intellectual curiosity through purposeful, play-based learning. Children are encouraged to question, to explore, and to engage actively with the world around them. While we are proud to be part of a strong academic pathway that leads to outstanding outcomes, we understand that achievement is not the destination, but rather the foundation for lives filled with purpose and meaning. Through our focus on STEAM, the thoughtful integration of technology, and the use of inspiring, well-designed facilities, children are immersed in environments that spark creativity, innovation, and problem-solving from a young age.

Equally important is our commitment to Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), which is woven into the fabric of daily life at our school. We recognise that confidence, resilience, empathy, and the ability to form healthy relationships are essential for lifelong success. Through guided interactions, play, and reflection, children begin to understand themselves and others, developing a strong sense of identity and emotional awareness. These foundational skills support not only learning, but also the development of kindness, respect, and a sense of responsibility within a community.
Through joyful exposure to Hebrew, meaningful engagement with Jewish experiences and a living connection to Israel, children develop a lasting connection to their identity. This is thoughtfully integrated with a broad and engaging secular curriculum, creating a balanced and holistic educational experience.
Every child at Minnie Bersohn is recognised as a unique individual with their own voice, strengths, and interests. We strive to nurture children who are not only curious and capable, but who grow into individuals who are moral, ethical, and humane. Through rich opportunities in creative arts, movement, imaginative play, and early leadership experiences, children begin to discover their passions and develop confidence in their abilities. These early years are a powerful time of growth, where character is shaped, friendships are formed, and a sense of self begins to take root.
In an ever-changing world, we believe that even our youngest learners can begin to engage with curiosity, creativity, and compassion. Whether in our dynamic classrooms, vibrant outdoor spaces, or through everyday acts of care and sharing, children learn that their unique contributions matter and that they have the ability to make a positive difference.
We invite you to experience the Minnie Bersohn way for yourself. Come and explore our exceptional facilities, meet our passionate educators, and feel the warmth and energy that defines our school. We are proud of our heritage, inspired by innovation, and deeply committed to nurturing every child’s potential. Most importantly, we are a family—where every child is seen, every voice is heard, and every soul is nurtured.
I look forward to welcoming you and sharing in the extraordinary journey that awaits your child.
Jewish Life & Learning
At Minnie Bersohn Pre-Primary School, Jewish traditions and values come alive in joyful, multi-sensory ways. From morning davening and Hebrew songs, to play, crafts, and thoughtfully created classroom spaces, Jewish life is woven into everything we do.
Shabbat, the Chaggim and weekly Parsha bring rich stories and meaningful themes into daily learning, creating moments of celebration and connection throughout the year. Festivals such as Pesach, Shavuot, Succot and Rosh Hashanah, along with Israel’s national days, offer opportunities for shared experiences with families and the broader community.
Connections to Israel and South Africa are explored in colourful and experiential ways, helping children develop a strong sense of identity, pride and appreciation for diversity.
Educational Excellence
At Minnie Bersohn Pre-Primary school, academic excellence is nurtured every day by devoted, caring teachers who care deeply about each child and inspire a genuine and lifelong love of learning.

ISASA-aligned, play-based learning
Children learn best through play, whether structured and guided or freely explored. These early years are critical for holistic development, from social and emotional growth to physical and cognitive milestones.
Minnie Bersohn follows established ISASA guidelines and international trends to ensure that each child develops the appropriate skills at every stage. Through engaging classroom environments, purposeful play, sand and water activities, and carefully designed themes, children build literacy, numeracy, processing skills, motor coordination and emotional awareness.
Our aim is to nurture confident, independent and self-regulated children, while developing essential skills such as communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking.

Social & Emotional Learning
Social & Emotional Learning
Social and emotional wellbeing is deeply embedded in our daily programme. From as young as 18 months, children are gently guided to recognise and express their feelings, build relationships and develop empathy and respect for others.
“It’s Cool to Be Kind” is a constant thread in our school culture, where kindness is modelled, celebrated and encouraged. Our in-house Educational Psychologist works regularly with classes and supports families where needed, ensuring each child feels held and understood.

Purposeful Digital Learning
Purposeful Digital Learning
At Minnie Bersohn, technology is introduced thoughtfully and responsibly, with a strong focus on enriching learning rather than increasing screen time.
Our classrooms may include smart TVs and age-appropriate tools such as Bee-Bots, Sphero and Lego robotics, but the emphasis remains on the skills being developed as well as teaching digital citizenship. Through playful exploration of sequencing, patterns and problem-solving, children begin to build the foundations for coding, mathematics, literacy and logical thinking.

A Culture of Continuous Learning
A Culture of Continuous Learning
Our educators and assistants are committed to lifelong learning, regularly engaging in professional development that brings the latest research and best practice into the classroom.
This results in an eclectic and intentional teaching approach, drawing on a range of methodologies to create meaningful, developmentally appropriate learning experiences. Rather than following trends, our teachers make thoughtful choices that best support each child’s development.
The result is a dynamic environment where global best practice is carefully adapted to meet the needs of our children.

Beyond the Classroom
Intra- and Extra-Mural Enrichment
At Minnie Bersohn, learning extends far beyond the classroom. Our carefully planned programme of intra- and extra-mural activities encourages children to explore, create, move and grow in a joyful and balanced way.
Intra-Murals (Included in the School Day)
Our intra-mural programme is woven into the school day, offering structured, age-appropriate experiences that support each child’s development. As children grow, the programme naturally evolves to include language development, confidence-building activities and introductory Hebrew.
Extra-Murals (Optional After-School Enrichment)
We offer a range of optional extra-mural activities on campus, provided by external specialists.
These activities provide children with additional opportunities to develop skills, explore interests and build confidence in a fun, supportive environment within the safety and convenience of the school setting. Our families also have access to Speech & Language Therapy, Physiotherapy and Occupational therapy provided by external specialists on our grounds.
