There is a question that continues to surface in education circles, from conference stages to staffrooms:
How do we prepare children for a digital future?
It sounds like the right question. Urgent, even. But the more time I spend in conversations with educators across phases and contexts, the more I believe we may be asking the wrong thing entirely.
The real question is not how we prepare children for technology.
It is how we ensure technology does not come at the expense of the human foundations of learning.
Because somewhere along the way, “future-ready” has become shorthand for “digitally proficient”, and the two are not the same.
The Illusion of Starting with Screens
There is a persistent assumption in education that digital skills must begin with devices. Coding is introduced through platforms, robotics through kits, and problem-solving through apps.
But this logic is flawed.
The cognitive processes that underpin coding, such as sequencing, logical reasoning and pattern recognition do not originate on a screen. They are developed through far more fundamental, human experiences.
A child organising a game, building a structure, or retelling a story is already engaging in complex thinking. They are learning to predict, adapt, collaborate, and make sense of systems.
In other words, they are already “coding” — just without the device.
When we rush to introduce technology too early or too heavily, we risk skipping the very stages that make meaningful digital learning possible.
What We Lose When We Move Too Fast
There is a growing tension in schools between innovation and developmental appropriateness.
On one side, the pressure to keep up with rapid technological change. On the other, the understanding that children learn best through play, exploration, and social interaction — particularly in the early years.
When technology becomes the starting point rather than the extension, something important is lost.
We see it in reduced attention spans, in the decline of imaginative play, and in learners who can follow instructions on a screen but struggle to think independently without one.
This is not an argument against technology. It is an argument against misplacing it.
Reframing “Future-Ready”
If we step back, the skills most often associated with the future of work are not technical.
They are human.
Creativity.
Critical thinking.
Collaboration.
Communication.
These are the skills that allow individuals to navigate uncertainty, adapt to change, and solve problems that do not yet exist.
And importantly, these skills are not developed through passive interaction with technology. They are developed through experience — through discussion, experimentation, failure, and iteration.
Technology can support this process. But it cannot replace it.
The Role Technology Should Play
When used well, technology is powerful. It can extend thinking, unlock creativity, and connect learners to ideas and opportunities beyond the classroom.
But it should enter the learning process at the right moment.
After the thinking has begun.
After the curiosity has been sparked.
After the foundational skills are in place.
At its best, technology is not the driver of learning. It is the amplifier.
The danger lies in reversing that relationship.
A More Useful Question
Perhaps the question we should be asking is not:
How do we integrate more technology into education?
But rather:
What kinds of thinking do we want to develop in our learners — and where does technology genuinely add value?
This shift in thinking requires restraint. It requires educators to resist the pressure of trends and instead focus on what is developmentally sound and pedagogically meaningful.
It also requires confidence — the confidence to prioritise play in a world obsessed with productivity, and to recognise that the most important learning is often the least visible.
Returning to Foundations
The future of education will undoubtedly be shaped by technology. But it will not be defined by it.
It will be defined by our ability to hold onto what matters most: the human capacity to think, ליצור (create), connect, and make meaning.
Before learners can code, they must imagine.
Before they can automate, they must understand.
Before they can innovate, they must explore.
Devices will continue to evolve. Platforms will come and go.
But the foundations of learning remain the same.
And if we get those right, the future will take care of itself.
